BIOGRAPHY
Everything I create comes from my deep connection to Island culture and from knowing my place in the wider world. My work speaks to my relationships with the fish and sea creatures, the skies and winds, the storms and currents, and the Islands of the Torres Strait themselves. The Turtle and the Dugong appear often in my imagery, along with my own symbols, marks that have become my signature.
I work across lino relief, copper plate etching and carving, always guided by strength in style and symbol. I am ambitious and courageous in my practice, and over the years I have completed many significant works, including a massive tribal drum standing over six feet tall.
I am a leader at heart, a warrior in spirit, and I am honoured to be known as “Uncle Laurie” across the Torres Strait. My practice moves freely through colour, form and design, from tribal drums to hand-coloured etchings and prints. One of my greatest strengths is the purity of line, and the careful balance of form, design and function that guides my imagery.

My culture is who I am. It is my identity. It’s not about what my culture means to me, it’s about how I live it and how I make its meaning real. Culture is a gift. It’s not something I own or control. It was gifted to me, and like any gift, it carries responsibility. My role is to pass it on to my children, so it continues.

Art carries knowledge, it holds memories
I want people to understand that art in the Torres Strait is important because it documents our life experiences, our languages, and our stories, and our deep connection to Country. Art carries knowledge. It holds memory.
Art is also a voice, a political voice. Through art, we express the needs and the felt needs of our people. It allows us to speak when we are not being heard, and to tell our stories in our own way, on our own terms.
