A rich tapestry of indigenous art, deeply rooted in the heart of the Torres Strait
Our Story
TorresStralian, led by the renowned Badu Artist Laurie Nona, represents a rich tapestry of indigenous art, deeply rooted in the heart of the Torres Strait. As a 100% indigenous-owned enterprise, TorresStralian transcends business; it’s a movement, a beacon of authenticity, and a bridge connecting the timeless heritage of the Torres Strait with contemporary Australian lifestyles.

I believe in today’s society we have to set our hearts compass on this journey called life towards a destination, believing and trusting in the compass to guide us in reaching the destination we want in life.

Life in
Badu Island
I love living on Badu Island because this is where I belong. This is my home. It’s where my culture, my family and my responsibilities come together.
Badu keeps me connected to Country and to the stories that shape who I am. The land, the sea, the winds and the tides all speak to me here, and they guide my work and my way of living. Being on Badu allows me to live close to the rhythms of Island life, fishing, watching the weather, listening to Elders, and sharing time with family.

Badhu Habaka
2016, linocut print on paper
"Badhu Harbourka (2016) tells the story of the pearling industry on Badu Island. The work is dedicated to my father Philip Nona Senior – a respected elder of the industry. Intertwined within the print is a story of my father’s, which was composed into song and dance. The story tells of how two brothers – my father and my uncle (my father’s younger brother), were heading out at 4am on their pearl luggers. My uncle’s boat broke down, yet my father still went out to work in order to feed his family. He did not return until dark at which point he towed his brother back to Badu Harbour. My uncle was annoyed at being left all day on the boat. The song expresses this frustration between the brothers. In the center of the print you can see my father’s boat towing my uncle back to Badu Harbour.
